Phone Number Procurement Guide
Learn how to acquire and configure phone numbers for AI-powered calls on Fonify.
Phone Number Procurement Guide
Before your AI assistant can make or receive calls, you need a phone number connected to Fonify. This guide walks you through the available number types, procurement options, and how to get started.
Number Types
Fonify supports several phone number types, each suited to different use cases.
Mobile Numbers
Standard mobile numbers from local carriers. Best for outbound campaigns where caller ID recognition matters.
Fixed-Line Numbers
Landline numbers tied to a geographic area. Ideal for businesses that want a local presence.
SIP Trunk
Connect your existing PBX or telephony infrastructure directly to Fonify via SIP protocol.
International Numbers
Numbers from 40+ countries. Reach customers worldwide with a local caller ID.
Choosing the Right Number
Your choice depends on your campaign goals, target audience, and regulatory requirements.
| Factor | Mobile | Fixed-Line | SIP Trunk | International |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caller ID trust | High | Medium | Varies | Medium |
| Setup speed | 1-3 days | 1-5 days | Same day | 1-7 days |
| Cost | $$ | $ | $ | $$$ |
| Best for | Outbound | Inbound | Existing infra | Global reach |
In Turkey, mobile numbers used for automated calling require operator-level approval. See the Turkey Operators guide for details.
Procurement Process
Decide on the number type, country, and volume. Consider whether you need inbound, outbound, or both directions.
Some countries require business verification or specific licenses for automated calling. Fonify flags these during setup.
Decide whether you need a newly procured number or an existing carrier/SIP number. Then share the request or SIP details with support to start the connection process.
For existing numbers, Fonify sends a verification call or SMS. For new numbers, verification is handled automatically during provisioning.
Confirm which AI employee should use the number and what the fallback or voicemail behavior should be.
Connecting an Existing Number
If you already have a phone number from a carrier or SIP provider, support can connect it to Fonify for you.
Gather the SIP or carrier details for the number you want to use.
Share the SIP server address, username, password, and port with support so the Fonify-side connection can be completed.
Run a verification call with support to confirm audio quality and routing before going live.
Ensure your SIP provider allows third-party connections. Some carriers block external SIP registrations by default.
Number Management
Once connected, manage your numbers from the Fonify dashboard:
- Employee assignment -- Confirm with support which AI employee should use the number.
- Set caller ID -- Configure the display name shown to recipients.
- Monitor usage -- Track call volume, minutes used, and costs per number.
- Release numbers -- Disconnect numbers you no longer need to stop billing.
Tip
Use separate numbers for inbound support and outbound campaigns. This keeps your analytics clean and prevents caller ID confusion.
